Planted in February 2026
The 'Pawnee' pecan tree (Carya illinoinensis 'Pawnee') is a popular, fast-growing, and cold-hardy cultivar prized for producing large, high-quality, thin-shelled nuts early in the season (early September). It is ideal for home landscapes and smaller orchards, maturing at 20–30 feet tall with a 15–25 foot spread, much smaller than many other pecan varieties.
Key Characteristics & Care
- Size: Mature height of 20–30 ft, spread of 15–25 ft.
- Production: Bears fruit in 8–10 years (sometimes 4-5).
- Pollination: Type-I; requires a Type-II tree (e.g., 'Elliot', 'Kanza', 'Lakota', 'Mandana') for best production.
- Hardiness: Zones 6–10.
- Soil/Sun: Full sun, thrives in moist, fertile, well-drained soil.
- Disease Resistance: Good, but susceptible to scab.
Appearance
Pawnee pecan trees have a generally upright, oval shape, making them excellent, smaller-stature shade trees with attractive green foliage that turns yellow in the fall.

Benefits
- Early Harvest: Matures 2-3 weeks ahead of many other varieties.
- Nut Quality: High-quality, large, and thin-shelled, making them easy to crack.
- Versatility: More cold-hardy than many other, larger pecan types.
Planting and Maintenance
Plant in a permanent spot due to a deep taproot. Water regularly, particularly during dry spells, as they are thirsty trees. Apply fertilizer in early spring and prune in late winter to remove weak branches and shape the tree.
