Native to the cool, fast-flowing mountain streams of southern China, Panda Loaches are peaceful, active fish that spend much of their time exploring rocks, driftwood, and other aquarium surfaces. Juveniles display bold black-and-white bands that resemble a panda's coloring, while adults gradually develop more subtle brown, cream, and olive markings as they mature.

Panda Loaches thrive in well-established aquariums with strong water circulation, high oxygen levels, smooth rocks, and plenty of natural algae and biofilm. They prefer cooler water temperatures than most tropical fish and are best suited for specialized hillstream aquariums. These social fish benefit from being kept in groups of five or more, with plenty of space and hiding areas.

These loaches primarily feed on biofilm, soft algae, and microorganisms growing on rocks and aquarium surfaces. Their diet can be supplemented with high-quality sinking foods and occasional small frozen or live foods. A mature aquarium with established natural grazing surfaces is essential for their health.

Panda Loaches are sensitive to warm water, low oxygen levels, and unstable water conditions. They should only be introduced into mature, properly cycled aquariums with strong filtration and adequate water movement. A secure, tight-fitting lid is recommended, as these fish are capable of climbing aquarium glass.
