The Kiowa pecan tree (Carya illinoinensis 'Kiowa') is a popular, high-yielding cultivar developed in Texas (1953) known for producing very large, high-quality, thin-shelled nuts. It is a vigorous, precocious, Type-2 pollinator that typically reaches 70–100 feet in height and width. It is ideal for large yards, offering heavy nut production (40–50 lbs/tree) and shade.
Key Characteristics and Requirements:
- Nut Quality: Produces large, 48-nut-per-pound nuts with about 53% kernel, which are thin-shelled and possess a desirable, slightly dark color.
- Tree Size: Mature trees typically stand 70 to 100 feet tall.
- Pollination: Requires a Type-1 pollinator (e.g., Caddo, Oconee, Cape Fear, Creek) for best results.
- Hardiness & Soil: Hardy in USDA Zones 6–9. Prefers rich, moist, well-drained soils and full sun.
- Maintenance: Requires regular watering and fertilization in the spring. It is susceptible to scab in some areas and may exhibit alternate bearing if overproduced.
- Best Use: Excellent for home landscapes for both shade and high-quality nut production.
