- Size: Compact rosette, usually 1–2 ft high and 2–3 ft wide.
- Appearance: Glossy dark green leaves with very large, prominent dark brown or black teeth along the margins, which fade to grey with age.
- Habitat & Origin: Native to high-elevation rocky volcanic slopes in central Mexico (Morelos, Queretaro, San Luis Potosi).
- Light: Full sun to partial shade.
- Water: Low, needs occasional water in summer; very little to no water in winter.
- Hardiness: Generally hardy to 20°F-25°F; suitable for USDA Zones 9b-11, with some tolerance down to Zone 8b.
- Flowering: Monocarpic (dies after flowering). Produces a 6–15 ft stalk with yellow, green, or red flowers, usually after many years.
