Key Characteristics & Care
Feature Details
Size & Growth Typically grows 10–15 feet tall and 6–12 feet wide. It is a fast grower, putting on 2–3 feet per year in its youth when given regular irrigation.
Sun & Exposure Thrives in full sun to partial shade. It handles intense, reflected desert heat remarkably well.
Water Needs Low to moderate. Once established, it is highly drought-tolerant and can survive on minimal water. Regular summer watering yields lusher foliage, but it prefers well-drained soil and drying out between cycles.
Cold Hardiness Hardy down to USDA Zones 8–11 (10°F to 15°F).
Foliage & Fruit Features long, narrow, leathery green leaves. In spring, it produces inconspicuous yellowish flowers followed by attractive, papery, 3-winged seed pods that transition from green to tan or rose.
Landscape Uses Highly popular as a privacy screen, informal hedge, or windbreak. It can also be trained into a small gnarled patio tree. Because it drops minimal litter, it is a safe and tidy option for planting next to swimming pools.
